Sleep apnea is a condition that people of all ages can suffer from. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which the person stops breathing during sleep. This is caused by the collapse of the respiratory organs. Breathing is relaxed in order to breathe and the lung tissue collapses to stop the person from breathing in full air.
Apnea occurs because of several factors. The most common causes are sleeping on one side or the other. When someone sleeps on their back, they pull up on the diaphragm muscles which pull the organs down and bring them into the upper airway. When someone sleeps on their side, the chest wall muscle and the diaphragm muscle pull up on the lower airway. As the body tries to breathe in full air, the body just relaxes and does not receive the amount of oxygen that it needs to be healthy. The result is a situation where the lungs are not receiving enough oxygen and the person stops breathing.
Once a person stops breathing, they will begin to experience symptoms. The individual will start to wake up a lot as if they were being woken up from a deep sleep. They may also experience an odd cold feeling in the throat and they will experience snoring. Sleeping problems can affect the rest of a person’s life. It affects the ability to drive, work out, or enjoy their life. There are a number of options available for those who suffer from sleep apnea.
